Zimmer Persona Knee Implant Recall

The Food and Drug Administration on March 12 issued a notice for a class II Recall for all lots and sizes of the Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate Knee Implant. This recall followed complaints that loosening of the implants caused premature failure. Failure may require revision surgery which is the replacement of the implant.  Zimmer Inc. issued a global recall of its Persona knee implants following the FDA notice.

Zimmer marketed the Persona knee systems as designed to perform as anatomically accurate as the natural knee. It also stated that its materials performance and longevity is unrivaled.

Some symptoms of implant failure are:

  • Radiolucent lines ? large gaps in between knee replacement components or between components and bone.  This early indication of implant failure can cause a number of tissue and bone problems, one possibility is bone damage called osteolysis. These dark lines can be seen on x-rays.

  • Severe pain

  • Swelling

  • Poor fixation

  • Decreased mobility
